Ask A Genius 1184: Infrastructure and Tweeting Online

*Interview conducted in November, 2024.*

Scott Douglas Jacobsen: You mentioned tweeting about infrastructure projects.

Rick Rosner: Yes, I tweeted that 10,000 infrastructure projects had been completed as of May. That’s a significant number. Biden managed to pass the first major infrastructure bill since Obama, and the U.S. badly needs it, given the poor state of roads and bridges. But, of course, MAGA supporters often ask, “Where are the results?” which is unfair, as the bill was passed in November 2021. It takes time for funds to be allocated and projects to be approved.

They claim that nothing has happened, implying corruption or wasted money. I replied to a woman who tweeted that claim, pointing out that according to Reuters, at least 40,000 projects had been started by May. She replied that project beginnings don’t mean anything. So, I found an article confirming that 10,000 had already been completed and shared the link, which was from the Department of Transportation. After that, she didn’t respond, probably because she went to bed. Not because I out-debated her—that never happens on Twitter. You can’t change a MAGA supporter’s mind.

Jacobsen: True. People rarely change their minds on Twitter.

Rosner: If they were open to changing their minds, they wouldn’t be arguing on Twitter in the first place.
